Every cell has tiny power plants called mitochondria. These six are each studied for a different piece of how cells make and use energy: the power plants themselves, a helper molecule cells need to make energy (NAD+), the folate cycle and AMPK signaling, carnitine (which carries fatty acids into mitochondria), the NNMT enzyme, and vitamin B12 (a cofactor for cell enzymes). Much of this research is in mice.

Studied for: cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane and the cell's power plants (mitochondria)
Studied for: the folate cycle and AMPK signaling (cell studies) and insulin signaling in skeletal muscle (mouse studies)
Studied for: the NNMT enzyme [nicotinamide N-methyltransferase] (mouse studies) and how it moves through the body [pharmacokinetics] (rat studies)
